The West – Rough Demo (Click to listen)

Death came callin’ today
come to take her away
figure she gave him a smile
she’d been waiting for a while

CHORUS
I know she’s where she wants to be
off with her God so far from me
I know she’s found some kind of rest
somewhere over to the West

VERSE
She used to take me on her knee
when I got big she’d set on me
just wanna hold her to my chest
she was so different from the rest

CHORUS

VERSE
She was the last one of her kind
ain’t no more that you will find
now she’s passed on through that door
she’s still the one I do adore

CHORUS

VERSE 1
Death came callin’ today
come to take her away

Robert Frank

Robert Frank surfaced again while I was listening to Bill Janovitz’ excellent novella-length essay on Exile on Main Street. Frank did some filming with the Stones on the project (and they used some of his work for the cover art)–connecting them back to the Beats and his own historic vision of the 1950s American landscape.

The Americans had it’s 50th anniversary last year and there’s an amazing “catalog” from that exhibition (really a huge, masterful brick of a book) that delves into Frank’s formative career prior to 1959, presents numerous excellent, deep dive essays, includes many of the original contact sheets, and other related gems from the National Gallery’s Frank archives. What a pleasure to walk into these priceless images once again.
