Not quite sure about this last one

Posted in 52 Songs, Songwriting on November 11, 2010 by David

Nine songs in and fully caught up. This last song, Lay Down Next To Me, is interesting — a very strange narrative. Feels like I will have to revisit this one a bit more later on. Maybe there needs to be a third verse.

I typically take a fair amount of time to let the story evolve and show itself. Working at a song a week pace does not allow for this organic development over time.

I also seem to have become fairly drawn to melody. To some degree this is due to starting with lyrics for many of these songs. I’ve more often started with a musical element, then built lyrics on top of that. This melodic approach is moving the style a bit from a genre perspective which is intriguing.

Ultimately, I recognize that the songs will evolve during rehearsals which is exciting to contemplate so no need to get too hung up at this point.

Lay Down Next To Me – Rough Demo (Click to listen)

Got a call from my daughter
said, “Best come home soon
Alice is a dying
won’t see the harvest moon”
She’s the strongest of us all
but there’s a weakness to her heart
Stepped into her room
and she gave me start

She was floating
above her body
like an angel
newly born
into light
and she said…

CHORUS
Lay down next to me
Lay down next to me
There’s nothing to fear
Come closer you’ll see
Lay down next to me

She took hold my hand
That’s when I first felt the sting
A strange kind of current
spreading out from my ring
Alive for the first time
then a shortness of breath
Her eyes became empty
Her face became Death

She took me up
room spinnin’
sky alive
with stars
and I was floatin’
and she said…

CHORUS

Don’t Follow Me Down (#7 of 52 Songs)

Posted in 52 Songs on October 30, 2010 by David

Don’t Follow Me Down – Rough Demo (Click to listen)

I’m calling out to you
from another place
another time
Might feel like a shiver
a shudder
maybe a sign
I’m floating ‘cross
your bedroom ceiling
trying to get back
in your head
Talking to you
from the other side
just like I always said

CHORUS
Have you missed me darlin’
all this time
I’ve been restless
in the ground
Did you lay yourself down
‘cross my grave
sing me softly
that blessed sound
Is that mud
tracing a line
along the hem
of your gown
You’re walking in darkness
that way’s the light
don’t follow me down

I warned you
after we’d first met
I’d wreck your life and
break your heart
Find yourself another
I can’t resist you
so baby please just don’t start
You were blind to the peril
and let me in
now there’s little left to say
‘Cept get on with it darlin’
time’s fadin’ fast
just lock me away

CHORUS

I’d seen him
once or twice before
sittin’ down at the end of the bar
Had his eyes glued right to you
I ain’t the kind
you can to push too far
Did he deserve it
who can say
but the jury told me no
Last time I saw you
in that jail
I said, “I told you so”

CHORUS

Out With a Bang (#6 of 52)

Posted in 52 Songs, Pics on October 23, 2010 by David

The Gun In Question (Drawing by C. Mueller ©2010)

Out With A Bang – Rough Demo (Click to listen)

Never made a dime
but save for that
he was making cool shit
all the time
telescopes
ground from scratch
crazy plans to make
plots to hatch
hand-carved chests
for each of his kids
can’t say for sure
why he hit the skids

CHORUS
Went out with a bang
used a gun ’cause
only criminals hang
held his fire
when the telephone rang
Daddy said he did
sound strange
Out with a bang
thought he was sick
turned out to be wrong
jumped the gun
now he’s too early gone
didn’t want no part of slow dying

Laying ’round the house
got some of his stuff
masculine shit
like he was some
kinda tough
got the gun he used
black and brown
I’ve pulled that trigger
hammer finding no round
with that barrel pressed
upside my head
still glad to be breathin’
not ready for dead

CHORUS

He knew I was coming
didn’t stick around
finally showed up
he was fresh
in the ground
real piece of work
from all I’ve been told
brain runnin’ wild
hot then cold
I share his name
but not his fate
song’s comin’ from love
not from hate

CHORUS
